DeepaMehta 2.0b8express at FOSSFA Welcome

Filed under: Common — Malte @ 5:49 PM

Dear Users, Developers and Friends of DeepaMehta,

we were recently invited to demonstrate the most current DeepaMehta Community Build at the FOSSFA Welcome, here in Berlin. After a tough day for all the FOSSFA and InWent colleagues, we had a short round-up introduction where the Spokeswomen of the Organisation had some nice and vibrant words about our get together. “We share the passion for changing the globe through innovations with free and open source tools.” She lovely mentioned the newthinking staff and how glad she is to be back and warmly welcomed at the store in Tucholskystreet. She was there before and in these days she mentioned that this is a very special place for her which was underlined as she said: “Today, there is a new thinking Africa!”

Flyer for the FOSSFA WelcomeHeading for some techtalk I was glad to get in touch with Mr. Nii Amon Dsane who, himself a developer with experiences in developing software around mobile phone services, is now working as secretary at FOSSFA. He developed server infrastructure at rancardmobility.com and runs a software company named wuupt, which provides different products for serving mobile content end-to-end. If you are interested in that topic area, you can signup for testing now and test how to serve and process messages to and from your customers via sms, the service is currently for free and to find at txtopen.

It was nice to see some surprised eyes after introducing him to the DeepaMehta Software. I think that it can prove to be useful for more people out there, for example: within the field of technology related education or as urban manamgent and mapping tool, like it’s in use for the city of Berlin. To be able to hook in all kind of application logic into collaborative environment for topic maps while supporting all three levels of a software engineering process is a unique token of DeepaMehta. It’ll show up if this tool can build bridges over thousands of miles what is often hardly accomplished within ones own neighbourhood. Luckily there is some wire which let us cross oceans and borders and these cable technologies approved to be very helpful in bringing people with common interests together.

For today, I just packaged the DeepaMehta “take-away” installation which i used that evening for everyone out there, eager to run and test ist. You can use it after unzipping it on your flash memory stick, for example. But please don’t expect too much, it’s not meant to reach the end-user audience yet, more it’s for testing our latest unstable version. This version includes three very early versions of the most current applications of the DeepaMehta Software and this is mostly the new thing about it. The first is the CSV Import Wizard Topic, which allows you to import simple structured data from your Desktop into DeepaMehta to visualize it. The second is an early integration of the Lobo Browser as a Webpage Topic for browsing through the World Wide Web and the third is the already known and yet simple Twitter Topic.

If you wanna use this version now as your portable think tool to support your working sessions, carrying your documents or designing future applications you do us a great favour through reporting your experience to us. Please keep in mind, just to say it again, this version is not for installing it on your customers computers. You can download this slightly big package (~50 MBs) from the page, linked in here.

The community is eager for your feedback and will slowly setup some wikipages dedicated to each of these new Features.
